The Sanctity and Worth of Disabled Lives
January is a month centered around the sanctity of human life and the pro-life movement. Many churches across the United States have a “Sanctity of Human Life Sunday” where pastors will share why the church is for the sanctity of human life and how people can the congregation can be practically pro-life.
Two of the biggest pro-life marches are held in January: March for Life in Washington, D.C. and OneLife LA in Los Angeles. I had the opportunity to speak at OneLife LA and was able to speak to the sanctity of human life with regards to babies with disabilities. Disability found in utero is the single greatest trigger for an abortion in the United States – seen in the fact that 67% of children in utero that have Down’s syndrome are aborted in the US.
Our lives matter whether we are disabled or not. Our lives carry value and meaning because those aspects are inscribed on us by God. We are worth it and we need to continue to speak towards that truth.
